Greater Morgantown Area Retirement Community
(Monongalia County)
CLIC Progams

For more than twenty years, the Community Living Initiatives Corporation (CLIC) has worked to establish Morgantown and Monongalia County as a "Liveable Community." By partnering with other organizations, CLIC, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, has promoted aging-in-place and other initiatives to enhance the quality of life for all West Virginians.

These initiatives include developing projects focused on retiree attraction and in CLIC's areas of interest: transportation, housing, education, recreation, health care, employment & volunteer opportunities, and social services. Under the Livable Community banner, the positive aspects of living in this community and aging-in-place are emphasized while acknowledging and addressing identified needs.

ACCESSIBLE RECREATION

CLIC is a partner with the West Virginia Assistive Technology System (WVATS) and other state agencies on A Guide to Accessible Recreation in West Virginia, a comprehensive guide to information on the accessibility of recreation sites in West Virginia, including State Parks, museums, art centers, historical locations, trails and other sites.

The purpose of the guide is to provide information for older travelers and individuals with disabilities on the accessibility of some of West Virginia's key tourism attractions. CLIC believes that tourism is a key way to introduce potential retirees to life in this state and this guide provides valuable information to make their visit to West Virginia more enjoyable.

FAIR HOUSING INITIATIVES PROGRAM

CLIC is proud to be a part of the Northern West Virginia Center for Independent Living (NWVCIL) West Virginia Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP), the state's first and only HUD-funded program to provide education and outreach on Fair Housing. As part of its obligation to this program, CLIC provides technical assistance including education, research and dissemination. CLIC has presented Fair Housing information to individuals and housing professionals statewide.

A HOME FOR LIFE

A Home For Life is a series of programs for homebuilders, remodelers and homeowners that provides information on Universal Design concepts and their application in the home. Activities include public education presentations, and an exhibit showing many ways living environments can be made accessible, affordable and safe.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME

Through various grant programs, CLIC conducts in-home assessments for West Virginia homeowners, 65 and older and individuals with disabilities, across the state. The comprehensive assessments provide homeowners with recommendations for home modifications, activities of daily living and local resources to help them realize their desire to stay in their own home. The statistical information produced as a result of these assessments is shared with public and private entities to assist them in developing policies aimed at helping West Virginians age-in place.

SENIOR ART EXHIBIT

The Senior Art Exhibit showcases the work of artists 55 and older. This non-juried event is held in May of each year, which is nationally recognized as Older Americans Month. The Monongalia Arts Center (MAC) provides a location as well as administration for this activity.

SENIOR LIFESTYLE EXPO

The Expo is northcentral West Virginia's only information fair that specifically targets older adults and their families. Exhibitors representing local and state agencies are on hand for this event, providing information on programs and activities offered especially for seniors, entertainment and prizes for participants. The event is held annually at Mountaineer Mall, under the direction of the Senior Monongalians, Inc.

WALKABILITY

This project is designed to increase public awareness of the laws and courtesies regarding pedestrians and analyze the community's existing sidewalk, roadway and trail systems. CLIC supports students and other community groups that desire to conduct surveys of sidewalks and curb cuts in the City of Morgantown.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

Each year, CLIC honors a local individual or organization that has made significant contributions to improving the quality of life for older adults. The 2010 recipient was West Virginia Public Broadcasting.

Essentially, independent living means living just like everyone else. This includes having opportunities to make decisions that affect one's life, being able to pursue activities of one's own choice and limited only to the extent that one's neighbors, who may be people without disablities, are limited.
